How to Choose a Kitchen Factory — Eight Criteria Before You Sign

The difference between a kitchen that lives ten years and one that collapses in two is not the price — it is eight things you ask about before you sign.

1. A factory or a middleman?

Ask directly: do you manufacture, or do you buy and resell? A middleman adds his margin to your price and has a third party to blame when something goes wrong. A factory carries the consequence itself.

2. Who supplies the materials?

A supplier who imports his own boards knows the origin and chooses the specification. One who buys whatever is available in the local market takes what he is given — and so do you.

3. Do they provide a 3D design?

If you cannot see the kitchen before manufacturing, you are buying a description. A 3D design catches layout mistakes while changing them still costs nothing.

4. Who installs?

Many suppliers manufacture then hand the kitchen to a local contractor they have never supervised. Ask whether the installation crew is the factory’s own. Most complaints we are called to inspect are installation faults, not manufacturing faults.

5. What exactly does the warranty cover?

“Ten-year warranty” means nothing until you ask on what. Manufacturing defects? Installation? Hinges and runners? Get it in writing, with the exclusions stated. A supplier who will not write the exclusions down has not thought about them.

6. Is the quotation itemised?

One opaque number hides everything. A real quotation states: board type and thickness, edge banding, hinge and runner models, worktop, lead time and warranty. Ask for that table. Whoever refuses knows the detail is not in his favour.

  • The board type and its thickness — not just the word “wood”.
  • The type of hinges and drawer runners, and whether soft-close is included.
  • Whether the worktop is inside the price or outside it.
  • Whether delivery, installation and finishing are included.
  • The delivery time, in writing.

7. What is the lead time, and is it written?

A verbal promise of “two weeks” is not a commitment. A written delivery date is. Ask what happens if it slips.

8. Do they explain, or do they sell?

The most reliable signal of all. A supplier who tells you the drawbacks of a material before its advantages, and who recommends the cheaper option when it suits you better, is thinking about the next ten years. One who says every material is “the best” is thinking about this afternoon.

Warning signs

  • A price far below everyone else — the difference is hidden in the board and the accessories.
  • A firm price over the phone, with a refusal to come and measure.
  • Refusing to name the board manufacturer or its specification.
  • No written warranty, or one with no stated exclusions.
  • Pressure to pay a large deposit today, before you have seen the design.
  • No physical samples to inspect and handle.
  • No fixed address and no possibility of visiting.
