Saj Steel Kitchens in Riyadh — Plain or 5 cm? The Difference That Matters

Saj is one of the most resilient materials in Riyadh kitchens — and the one with the worst reputation. Say “saj kitchen” and many people picture something cheap and institutional. Say “powder-coated steel kitchen” and the same person pictures something modern and durable. They are the same thing. The reputation comes from a generation of badly made saj kitchens, not from the metal.

What saj is

Saj is the common Arabic term for a steel sheet, folded and formed into cabinet bodies and door panels, then coated. The kitchen is built from formed metal rather than from board with a skin on it. Three things decide whether it is excellent or awful:

• Sheet gauge — the thickness of the steel, and the number cheap workshops never state.
• The coating — electrostatic powder coating, oven-cured, is the correct process. Spray paint applied in a back room chips and rusts at every scratch.
• Cut edges — steel rusts where it is cut and left bare. Every cut edge must be folded, sealed or coated.

Plain saj

Flat formed steel fronts. Clean, minimal, and the least expensive metal kitchen we make. Right for service kitchens, rental properties, utility rooms, and anyone who wants metal durability with no decorative ambition.

Saj 5 cm (reinforced profile)

A heavier formed profile around the front, roughly five centimetres deep, which adds rigidity and a more substantial appearance. The door feels heavier in the hand and holds its shape better over years.

Is the difference worth paying for? Our honest answer: yes if it is a main kitchen used every day, and no if it is a service kitchen or a rental unit where plain saj does the same job. We will say which we think you need after seeing the space — and we have recommended plain saj to clients who came in asking for the 5 cm.

The direct comparison

What actually determines the quality of a saj kitchen

The material is half the story. The other half:

1. The gauge of the steel itself — thin sheet dents with use.
2. The quality of the coating and the treatment — a baked powder coat resists scratching and fading far better.
3. The accessories — soft-close hinges are essential with metal, otherwise the doors become noisy.
4. The cabinet body — the board behind the front must resist moisture, especially under the sink.

Why saj suits Saudi kitchens

• It does not absorb water. Metal has no fibres to swell — the failure that kills board kitchens does not exist here.
• Heat does not deform it. A kitchen closed up all day in a Riyadh summer is no problem.
• Insects have nothing to eat and mould nothing to grow on.
• It is the cheapest metal kitchen available — less than aluminium, with much of the same resilience.
• It can be recoated a decade later instead of replaced. No board-based kitchen offers this.

And the drawbacks? Honestly

• Thin sheet dents, and metal does not spring back. The answer is gauge stated as a number in the quotation.
• Rust is possible where the coating is broken and the edge is bare. This is the one honest vulnerability, and it is entirely a workmanship issue. Every rusted saj kitchen we have been called to inspect had bare cut edges inside the cabinets.
• The finish range is narrower than aluminium, particularly for convincing wood effects.
• Steel doors are heavy. With underrated hinges they sag within a year, so soft-close hinges rated for the weight are structural here, not a comfort upgrade.

Saj against our other materials

If durability at the lowest cost is the priority, saj is excellent. If appearance and finish variety matter more, aluminium or acrylic is the better call.
